Sunrise Silicon Valley is organizing the Silicon Valley Youth Climate Strike 2022 on April 22nd to celebrate Earth Day! The march will start at the San Jose City Hall and then end with a fun-filled rally at Plaza de Cesar Chavez (there will be speeches, music, and, hopefully, food). This youth-led action will balance a celebration of our planet with an urgency for climate action in order to rekindle passion for collective liberation and inspire greater changes in governmental policy. Join us to rally for our future and celebrate our Earth! You won’t want to miss this!

Rides can be arranged for those who need them.

ROUGH TIMELINE OF THE ACTION:
4-4:30: opening call to action + hype speeches at city hall

4:30-5:00: march to plaza de cesar chavez

5:00-6:30: rally + booths at plaza de cesar chavez

Rally in Santa Rosa on Friday Apr 22, 2022

Sonoma County is far behind on its equity commitments, far behind on addressing the climate emergency, and far behind on its Vision Zero traffic safety goals. And yet our leaders are still failing to properly invest in the one thing that would help us make rapid progress with all three of these important goals -- our Public Transportation System.

Currently, transit riders in Sonoma County are made to waste hours waiting for buses that come infrequently and are often late. Further, as a result of limited schedules, transit riders lose out on many educational, economic, and social opportunities.

This creates an unequal and dangerous system. Unequal because people who cannot afford a car, or cannot drive for some other reason, are forced to live diminished lives. Dangerous because those who can drive choose to opt out of public transportation, thereby contributing to a host of public health threats: greenhouse gas emissions, crowded roads, unhealthy air, and increased traffic casualties.

The time has come to change course. An equitable, resilient, and prosperous Sonoma County is only possible if our leaders decide today to invest in the obvious solution:

Safe, affordable, reliable public transportation for all!

We will be hosting a march starting from the SRJC to the Board of Supervisors office, where we will be hosting a rally and chalking action calling on the Board of Supervisors to invest in our transit system and create transformative transit justice.

Additionally, we are asking all students to strike from their final period, and are working on figuring out what transit assistance we can provide- please reach out to sunrisesoco (at) gmail (point) com if you are interested in helping recruit students from your school and would like to interface with us about transit!
